Dominican Republic Surpasses 3,800 Private Aviation Operations in 2026 as Flying Caribbean Adventure Returns

Montecristi, Dominican Republic — The Dominican Republic continues to cement its position as the Caribbean’s leading destination for general aviation. As of mid-April 2026, the country has logged 3,882 non-commercial private aviation operations since January — a milestone that underscores a sustained upward trend that began in 2024 and shows no signs of slowing.

The latest arrival came this Tuesday, when five general aviation aircraft landed at Gregorio Luperón International Airport in Puerto Plata, carrying approximately 10 visitors who departed from Miami as part of the Flying Caribbean Adventure, the annual fly-in coordinated by veteran U.S. aviation promoter Jim Parker.

From Puerto Plata to Montecristi

After clearing in at Puerto Plata, the group continued to Osvaldo Virgil Domestic Airport in Montecristi, where they were welcomed by a reception committee from the Dominican Airport Department (DA), along with municipal mayor Jesús Jerez, provincial and regional directors from the Ministry of Tourism — Torre Marichal and Radhamés Arias — as well as representatives from IDAC and the Tourism Police (POLITUR).

Parker expressed his gratitude for the warm reception, noting that several participants were visiting the Dominican Republic for the first time. Over three days, the group explored Montecristi’s mangroves, learned about banana and rice cultivation, and hiked the iconic El Morro — an experience that goes well beyond the typical Caribbean fly-in.

The Numbers Behind the Growth

The scale of this growth becomes clear when looking at the data across airports. In January 2026, La Romana led with 482 operations, followed by El Higüero (Presidente Dr. Joaquín Balaguer International Airport) with 410, and Punta Cana with 380. Domestic airports also contributed significantly: Cabo Rojo (185), Osvaldo Virgil (153), El Catey (144), Expedición 14 de Junio (75), and Arroyo Barril (6) — totaling 1,960 operations for the month.

February 2026 saw El Higüero take the top spot with 478 operations, followed by La Romana (402), Punta Cana (318), Cabo Rojo (252), Gregorio Luperón (144), El Catey (128), Osvaldo Virgil (94), Expedición 14 de Junio (88), and Arroyo Barril (18) — for a monthly total of 1,922 operations.

Looking back, 2025 recorded 18,909 general aviation operations across all airports — with El Higüero (4,798) and Punta Cana (4,466) leading the pack. In 2024, total operations reached 13,951, with Punta Cana (3,942) and El Higüero (3,478) again at the top.

$400 Million Annual Economic Impact

Beyond the flight logs, the economic significance is substantial. Since 2024, general aviation — driven primarily by private jets and executive aircraft linked to tourism — has contributed an estimated $400 million annually to the Dominican economy. That figure reflects the high-spending profile of general aviation visitors and the multiplying effect of their activity across hospitality, ground transportation, and local services.

For a destination actively working to become the number one private aviation hub in the Caribbean, these numbers represent more than statistics — they represent momentum.

The executive director of the Airport Department (DA), Víctor Pichardo, conducted a supervision tour of the works at the Santiago Heliport, located near the Central Park, to verify the progress of the work and ensure compliance with the established schedule.

According to the official, the landing and takeoff platform (FATO) of the Santiago heliport is already more than 80% complete, and construction work on the terminal has already begun, which will include administrative offices, a waiting room and other essential spaces.

Pichardo highlighted the strategic importance of this project for the economic development of the Cibao region, particularly in Santiago de los Caballeros. The new heliport will directly benefit key sectors such as tourism, business and medical emergencies, especially in the event of natural disasters.

“We are constantly monitoring this priority work, which will promote the development of the entire Cibao and strengthen Santiago’s air connectivity. This heliport will have a positive impact on tourism, business and medical emergency care,” said Pichardo.

The DA director also confirmed that the work is progressing according to the planned plan and that daily monitoring is carried out to guarantee delivery within the established deadlines.

Technical characteristics of the Santiago Heliport

The project has a modern FATO-type platform for landing and taking off of helicopters, as well as three parking platforms for aircraft, each of 314 square meters of reinforced concrete, built under the regulations of the Dominican Aeronautical Regulation RAD-14, Volume II (Heliportos).

In addition, it incorporates a state-of-the-art aeronautical lighting system activated by radio frequency from the aircraft itself, which will allow safe operations at night.
La Vega Heliport is now ready for delivery

After the visit to Santiago, Pichardo announced that he will carry out similar supervision at the La Vega Heliport, located on the grounds of the Professor Juan Bosch Traumatological and Surgical Hospital, which is practically completed and ready for delivery.

“These infrastructures are essential both to respond to emergencies and to promote business and tourism. With them we continue to advance President Luis Abinader’s vision of strengthening air connectivity throughout the Dominican Republic,” said the director of the Airport Department.

The La Vega heliport has a 21 x 21 meter platform equipped with an advanced aeronautical lighting system for safe night operations. The official opening date will be announced soon.

Another case of timely assistance occurred days before the holiday, specifically Friday, March 27, when the Aeroambulance services transferred a minor patient from the Sierra de Hato Mayor, to the Ciudad Sanitaria Dra. Evangelina Rodríguez Perezo hospital complex, in Santo Domingo Norte, using as a platform the modern heliport of the same name, located in the area, so that the patient could receive care at the Dr. Ney Arias Lora Traumatology Center.

The La Vega heliport, located on the grounds of the Professor Juan Bosch Traumatological and Surgical Hospital, was key to the timely assistance of a patient who suffered injuries in a highly physically demanding hiking activity on Pico Duarte, during the Easter holiday.

The patient, who according to preliminary medical reports would have suffered a broken femur, received first aid in the same complexity of the area, and was subsequently transferred to the trauma hospital in an Air Force helicopter (FARD).

Initially, his transfer was planned to the Plaza de la Salud, in Santo Domingo, where there is also a heliport, however, it was decided to choose the trauma center in La Vega, under the coordination of a staff from the National Health Service (SNS) led by Dr. Antonio Jiménez, in charge of the General Directorate of Out-of-hospital Emergency Care Services, and the FARD.

“It is in these moments, specifically, that it is important to have hospitals in our country equipped with special infrastructures, such as these emergency heliports, to carry out rescues and helitransported assistance safely,” indicated Víctor Pichardo, director of the Airport Department (DA).

The La Vega heliport, built by the DA, is part of the National Heliport Network headed by Pichardo’s management, and which, during this Semana Mayor holiday, was at the disposal of the authorities of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), for foreseen cases even at night.

Another case of timely assistance occurred days before the holiday, specifically Friday, March 27, when the Aeroambulance services transferred a minor patient from the Sierra de Hato Mayor, to the Ciudad Sanitaria Dra. Evangelina Rodríguez Perezo hospital complex, in Santo Domingo Norte, using as a platform the modern heliport of that same name, located in the area, so that the patient could receive care at the Dr. Hugo Mendoza pediatric hospital.

Vertiport

During the Easter holiday, the DA offered assistance and also worked together with the implementation of the structure of the first Vertiport for prevention of disasters or emergencies in the key areas of Boca Chica, with the incorporation of four drones of different categories, prepared for preventive patrol and response actions.

Eddy Matos, from the Mare Foundation, explained that thanks to the combined action with the DA and other institutions, some twenty-two drone operations were successfully carried out, such as the one containing the lifeguard device, intended to monitor and assist those bathing visitors who leave the established control area.

“Our work together has allowed us to join forces and reduce the risks here on Boca Chica beach, becoming the pioneer once again in establishing preventive work in our country,” he said after noting that the teams are also equipped with cameras, speakers, and LED lights.

Franklin Polanco Honored by IDAC: Aula Magna of ASCA Named After Prominent Dominican Pilot and Aviation Promoter

In August 2024, the Instituto Dominicano de Aviación Civil (IDAC) held a special ceremony to honor Franklin Polanco, a respected pilot, communicator, and longtime advocate for the development of civil aviation in the Dominican Republic. The event took place at the Norge Botello Aeronautical Complex in Punta Caucedo, where IDAC officially named the main lecture hall (Aula Magna) of the Academia Superior de Ciencias Aeronáuticas (ASCA) after him.

IDAC Director General Héctor Porcella led the tribute and highlighted Polanco’s decades of contributions as a pilot and advisor. Porcella noted that Polanco has been part of the history of Dominican aviation, emphasizing his role in promoting safe aeronautical development both inside and outside the country. A plaque bearing his name was unveiled during the ceremony.

Polanco’s Contributions to Dominican Aviation

Franklin Polanco has played a key role in advancing civil aviation in the Dominican Republic for many years. He has served as an advisor to IDAC since its early stages, supported pilot training initiatives, and helped strengthen the Academia Superior de Ciencias Aeronáuticas (ASCA), where he is recognized as a foundational figure.

His work as a communicator has made aviation topics more accessible, and he has actively promoted the Dominican Republic as a destination for general and business aviation. This recognition also acknowledges his broader efforts in areas such as safety standards, mentorship, and fostering international connections in the sector.

Why This Tribute Matters for General Aviation Pilots

Honors like this reflect the growing importance of experienced pilots and educators in building a stronger aviation ecosystem. For private and recreational pilots flying to the Dominican Republic, improvements in training, procedures, and infrastructure — driven in part by advocates like Polanco — translate into safer flights, smoother operations, and better support at airports including Las Américas (MDSD), Punta Cana (MDPC), and popular regional fields for fly-ins.

This type of recognition also inspires the next generation of Dominican aviation professionals, benefiting the entire Caribbean general aviation community.

Samaná, Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic welcomed 11 aircraft with more than 20 passengers on board to Prof. Juan Bosch International Airport “El Catey” as part of the “Caribbean Air Rally” Fly-In event.

Each Fly-In contributes to boosting the economy of the provinces where they land, as it attracts high-spending tourists. Currently, the country receives approximately 15 Fly-In flights per year.

The aircraft and their crews were greeted on the tarmac by the Director of the Airport Department (DA), Víctor Pichardo, along with a delegation of officials from the institution, to welcome them to the country.

“We are thrilled to welcome Caribbean Air Rally 2026, in honor of the late Catherine Tobenas, a champion of general aviation and a lifelong ally of the Dominican Republic,” said Pichardo, after acknowledging the growth of private aviation in the country.

He emphasized that this recreational aviation initiative is part of the institutional efforts to promote non-commercial private aviation, with the support of the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, “who approved the protocol for its promotion and strengthening, and today we are enjoying the results, such as the growth of these types of activities that boost the economy of each province they visit.”

Meanwhile, Camil Dumont, president of Air Rally and coordinator of the visiting team, appreciated the reception from the authorities and highlighted the improvement the country has shown in general aviation, especially since 2020.

“Since 2020, the situation has changed for the better, and I think that’s due to the people,” Dumont stated, adding that they have been making trips to the Caribbean for twenty-four years and will celebrate their 25th anniversary in the country, given its strategic location for traveling to other destinations.

The aircraft originally departed from Fort Lauderdale, in southern Florida, USA, for a tour of the Caribbean. Beginning their first stop in the Turks and Caicos Islands, where they stayed for three days, they will then depart from the Dominican Republic for Nevis, located in the Windward Islands.

The visitors will be in the Dominican Republic for three days.

DA Director Víctor Pichardo indicates that the project is progressing according to the established schedule for the terminal’s construction.

The Airport Department (DA) announced today the start of paving work on the runway at El Granero del Sur Domestic Airport in San Juan province, as established in the construction schedule.

The agency explains that the process began more than a week ago, with the first step, liquid asphalt or primer.

“We are working tirelessly, but complying with the due process so that this important airport in San Juan province can be operational in a short time,” said Víctor Pichardo, executive director of the DA.

However, he noted that in recent days, San Juan has received significant rainfall, which has hampered progress. Work has been required to stabilize some affected areas with cement, before continuing the process with the runway, taxiway, and parking apron.

After the asphalt primer, used to create a waterproof layer and improve adhesion between the road surface and the asphalt tread layer, the tread layer will be laid, and in a final stage, signage and lighting, among other features, will be added.

Meanwhile, the gray structure that will house the airport terminal is ready for the mezzanine to be poured.

Likewise, progress is also being made on the construction of the barracks where the Air Force will operate.

The Airport Department will begin construction of the Santiago Heliport

The details were offered in a meeting with APEDI, the Mayor’s Office of Santiago and the Board of Trustees of the Central Park, where the work was fully supported.

Santiago. – The executive director of the Airport Department reported that everything is ready to begin construction of the Santiago Heliport in the next few days, a work described as a necessity for this city.

Víctor Pichardo offered the details during a visit to the headquarters of the Association for the Development of Santiago (APEDI), as well as to the board of trustees of the Central Park, where the construction will take place.

The official stressed that the greatest importance of this heliport lies in the fact that Santiago does not have a specialized structure like this one, to deal with emergency situations and carry out safe evacuations.

Pichardo indicated that the work was already tendered and awarded, in accordance with what is established by Law 340-06 on Purchases and Contracts, respecting all the corresponding regulations.

“Santiago cannot turn its back on connectivity and it is a project that is contemplated in the entire master plan for the Central Park, in addition to complementing the National Heliport Network in this area of Cibao,” Pichardo said.

At the meeting in which the mayor of Santiago, Ulises Rodríguez, participated, he stated that “this project only formalizes a space that is used for these landings, but without the security and formality required.”

Meanwhile, the president of APEDI, Juan Mera, assured that this is a project to which they have given their full support, because it is vital in the face of the economic growth that the city is experiencing, but at the same time to address management in the face of possible catastrophes.

“If Santiago does not prepare itself, including this solution that the heliport represents, we will not have the necessary facilities to face the level of investment, which is growing in this city,” said Mera.

The heliport will have a modern terminal and three helipads, with a totally environmentally friendly design and integrated into the Central Park.
